Special EventsSummertime Kid Friendly Food Drive:
Summertime for a lot of kids means missing meals, that school lunch that they can count on five days a week during the school year. From May 9th through May 17th, St. Alfred’s and Plato Academy will be collecting specific food items for both FEAST and Dunedin Cares. FEAST has requested peanut butter and jelly, cereal, canned pasta and pasta. Dunedin Cares would like individual serving apple sauce, fruit cups, mac and cheese, ravioli and soups. The big box will be set up in the narthex to receive donations. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. Susan Broward 727-560-8680. A Morning of Prayer: But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. On Saturday, May 16th at 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in the Choir Room, St. Alfred’s Centering Prayer Group invites you to withdraw from the cares of the world by attending a morning of silent prayer. We will meet in the choir room on the north side of the church; please enter through the choir room doors. For questions or to register, please email: [email protected]. Registration is not required, but it will help us to know how to set up the prayer circle. While Centering Prayer is the basis of our teaching, all meditation paths are welcome. Books on the spiritual journey will be available to browse or to borrow from the church. OneBlood Mobile: On Sunday June 14th, St. Alfred’s will be hosting the OneBlood Mobile. The goal is to have at least 7 donors. Each donation helps three patients through a process called blood component therapy. Each donation is separated into red blood cells to treat anemia and trauma patients, platelets for those undergoing chemotherapy or those with blood disorders, and plasma helps burn patients and those with liver disorders. So please, if you can roll up your sleeve and give life-saving blood. The Big Red Bus will be in the parking lot from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Any questions call or text Susan Broward 727-560-8680. Undie Sunday 2026: Our 2026 annual ingathering for the Clothes to Kids “Undie Sunday” (aka “Drop Your Drawers”) campaign will take place on the weekends of June 6-7 and June 13-14. Each year, Clothes to Kids tries to send each child they serve back to school with 5 new pairs of underwear and 5 new pairs of socks. Let’s help meet that goal! While the greatest need this year is for boys (XS-XL) and young men’s (S-3XL), boxer briefs, Clothes to Kids is grateful for all donations. Please help to make this year’s Clothes to Kids ingathering a success! Stop by the narthex on June 6-7 and 7-14 and Drop Your Drawers into the donation box! An envelope will be provided for those wishing to make a cash, check, or gift card donation. Mentor Training: On Thursday, June 25th at 10:00 am, St. Alfred’s will be hosting an in person Take Stock in Children (TSIC) training with representatives from the Pinellas Education Foundation to guide us through the one hour session. There are posters on the bulletin boards in the narthex and in Reister Hall with QR codes that will allow you to register as a Pinellas County Schools Volunteer, complete the Take Stock in Children Mentor Application and either register for an in person training or an on line training session. Take Stock in Children is a scholarship program for first generation Americans and for children whose parents cannot afford post-secondary schooling. The scholarships can be used for both trade schools or college and provide two years of tuition and books for in state schools. The scholarships can be used in out of state schools but go less far toward the costs. In middle and high school the students are expected to maintain at least a C average, stay out of trouble, have good attendance and to meet with a mentor from the community 15 times during the school year during their lunch time. It is a 30 minute commitment for the mentor. Starting in August, all mentors must pass a level 2 background check which is run through the FDLE and does require fingerprinting at the mentor’s expense. This is a real life changer for kids. If the students maintain a B average in college they can apply to have the second two years of tuition and books paid for. The 2026 graduating class had 186 TSIC scholars, 47 of which had 4.0 GPA’s and 17 had 4.5 GPA’s, that is impressive ! Call or TEXT Susan Broward with any questions 727-560-8680. |
