Lay Leadership in Worship

For additional information or to help with any of these ministries, please contact the church office at 727-785-1601.

Acolytes
Acolytes serve with dignity and reverence when carrying the Cross or torches in procession, lighting and extinguishing the candles, holding The Book of Gospels, giving the offering plates to the ushers, assisting the celebrant to set up and clean up at the altar, ringing the Sanctus bell during the Eucharist, and any other assistance the clergy may need. Acolytes are scheduled each month on a rotating basis. New teenage or adult Acolytes are always welcome, and training is provided.   Contact:  Sandy Tuller

Altar Guild
The mission of the Altar Guild is to work closely with our clergy to create a spiritual and reverent setting for the Holy Eucharist. This Guild works behind the scenes by preparing the bread and wine, polishing all sacred vessels, and caring for hangings, linens and vestments. After each service they take care of the consecrated wine and host, cleanse all vessels and see that the sacristy is neat and clean and ready for the next service. No longer a ministry only of women, the Altar Guild also welcomes men who are interested in preparing for sacramental worship. New members are always welcome, and we offer on-the-job training.

Flower Guild
The Flower Guild is responsible for the care of the altar flowers, which are recycled and picked up by Random Acts of Flowers, an organization which takes flowers to those who are ill or confined. This ministry also decorates the church for Palm Sunday, Easter, Christmas and any other festive occasions. Flowers are paid from donations in the form of Memorials and Thanksgivings. Checks to St. Alfred’s Church, with a note on the memo line “For Flower Ministry,” may be placed in the offering plate or mailed to the church office.   Contact: Linda Kingsbury.

Intercessors
Intercessors read the Prayers of the People at every service. They do not have to be public speakers but must be able to read clearly so as to be understood. New Intercessors are trained and scheduled each month on a rotating basis.    Contact:  Sandy Tuller.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEMs)
LEMs are confirmed adult members in good standing who assist in administering Holy Communion as chalice bearers and otherwise serve at the celebrant’s direction. New LEMs receive training and are scheduled to serve each month on a rotating basis.  Contact:  Fr. Peter

Ushers
The ministry of Usher is one of both welcome and assistance. Ushers convey the first impression of St. Alfred’s to those arriving for worship. They act as greeters and guides at all worship services, take up the Offering, facilitate at Communion, and offer assistance when needed. Ushers receive training and are scheduled each month on a rotating basis.  Contact:  Al Kunkel
