Stewardship 2026: Plenty Good Room
|
St. Alfred’s long ago moved beyond thinking of stewardship as simply a fund-raising drive in the fall to balance next year’s budget. Rather, we have come to understand stewardship as the holy call placed on each of us to commit ourselves to caring for, protecting, nurturing, and celebrating all of the gifts God has blessed us with that make our lives so meaningful and rich.
So, what does that look like in practice? Each year, beginning in the season of Easter, we spend a couple of months exploring that very question in four parts: Community Care, Creation Care, Self Care, and Parish Care. As we explore each of these areas, we read and study together, we engage in projects or efforts that show our care, concern and gratitude, and we recommit ourselves to the holy work of being the good stewards God has called us to be. This year, our Stewardship Campaign is entitled “Plenty Good Room," based on the spiritual of the same name by The Rev. James Cleveland, and Jesus’ words of comfort to his disciples: “Trust me. There is plenty of room for you in my Father’s home.” (John 14:2, The Message). I think the invitation to see our lives and our world through the lens of plenty rather than scarcity is at the heart of God’s call placed on each of us to be good stewards. It leads us towards gratitude and generosity, and a spirit of openness and cooperation, rather than competition and hostility towards others. It leads us ever closer towards God’s Kingdom here on earth. My hope and my prayer is that each of you will seriously consider what ways God is calling you to step more fully into the holy work of being a good steward of all the blessings that God continues to shower upon His whole creation. There is “plenty good room” for you to step up and join with your sisters and brothers at St. Alfred’s as together we enter into this holy way of life called stewardship. Faithfully, Fr. Peter |
